The healing process is on its way but it will take a few weeks. At least the pain is not as much as before so I can sleep a little bit (I can only sleep face down so it was extremely painful). The bad thing, the damn painkillers are expensive. Hate that when I make plans to save some money everything just goes Puff!

Questions

Questions about design, requests for comments and observations are always welcome. You don't bother me when you do so please feel free to do it. It's important to share knowledge and experience and be sure that if I have questions I won't hesitate to ask.

First, I want to thank everyone for their positive response to my rant. I didn't expect so many people would read it.

Thank you so much!

The second thing is to retribute to everyone in some way and since just this week I got tagged like ten times I thought maybe we could play a game. I don't like memes but I don't mind answering your questions. Everyone can ask me up to five questions and you can ask me anything and I will answer with 100% honesty.

Everything except Math! Please don't ask anything related to Math.

Ok! I think I can be very patient and tolerant. I always try my best to give my clients and excellent service and don't have a conflict with anyone and when I do, I just keep it to myself because it's business, not personal. But here I draw the line, so here is my "advice" for the people that wants to commission me a design.

DON'T COMMISSION ME IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH ME NOT BEING FROM USA

The Internet is a neutral ground, you will find people from every part of the world and everyone is doing their best to compete and success so if you don't wish to hire me just because of my nationality, that's ok with me. But there is no way I will accept you refusing to pay me after I did the work just because you found out I'm not from USA. So if you have a problem with I politely ask you to just not contact me (And believe me, I'm so angry right now I'm barely stopping myself from cursing to the top of my lungs)

The reason of why I don't show my nationality in my profile is because I couldn't care less about it. Personally, I feel my country gave me nothing and I don't owe it anything. I'm who I'm because of myself, my family, my friends, my lovers, my classmates, my bullies, my experiences, my mistakes, my success and at the very end of that list is the ground I was born in. I digest more of the outside of my country and talk with so many people from different nationalities that I don't feel like I'm tied to it.

Just the food, I love the food. But cuisine is so international nowadays that I think I can survive in almost any other country and I so wish to move to a different country, in the legal way of course.

Thanks for reading!

Work Process

Please send a note, mail or chat to email ezaldivar.ilustrador@yahoo.com.mx or skype irian.whitefox with the following information:
  • Name of the Project/Logo
  • Name of the owner of the copyrights (Full Name, Company Name or alias) This name will be referenced by the designer on his online portfolios.
  • Information about the company, service, character or any other pertinent information for the realization of the design.
  • Specify if the design will be an Icon (Image only), Word Mark or Logotype (Signature) and Combination Mark (Text and Image).

  • Set a deadline for the conclusion of the project. Please consider a minimum of two weeks is required.
  • An email linked to Paypal.

Once the project starts the designer will provide with:

  • An initial design approach. It can be one or more cleaned designs (No sketches)
  • Frequent updates based on the client's speed of response and changes requested.
  • All updates are on jpg files of 25% of the actual size the design. No high-resolution images are provided on this stage.

  • When a design is approved and the final payment is received, the designer will provide with the original vector file and other formats requested.

Files

I work in Adobe Illustrator CS6. I will provide you with the original Adobe Illustrator file and high printing quality EPS files of the design and its variants. You can request other file formats like PSD, PDF, JPG and PNG.

Cancelations

If the designer doesn't receive any news from the client within 2 weeks, the project is considered abandoned and canceled. If the client wishes to restart the project it will be considered a new project and they will require to pay the advance payment for it.

Postponed projects

The client can request to postpone a project for two months. If the client restarts the project within the set time they won't require to pay the advance payment again.

Vault

The vault is a service you can request to keep your design in storage, which means I won't display it on my online portfolios for the time you need.

Intellectual Property Rights

This is a professional service. All designs are protected under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, the Creative Commons and their Intelectual Property Rights of each country where these designs are registered by their rightful owners. If you try to use one of these designs without permission you are subject to legal actions.

What happens in case of Multiple Discovery

In a case of a Multiple Discovery (When inventions are made independently by multiple people), the client can request a new design but only if it's within 3 months after finishing the commission.

Terms and Conditions of the service

a. The client agrees to cover an initial fee to commission a design.
b. The client won't receive any high-quality files until the remainder of the cost is acquitted.
c. While the project is in progress the client can't share any design approaches with other designers or artists to replicate or modify.

l. All unused design approaches belong to the designer.
m. The designer can re-use, recycle, modify, share or sell any unused design approaches.
n. The client can redesign, modify or alter the design in any way he/she wants. The designer will only keep author rights over the original design.

Commonly Asked Questions

1. Can I use the logo I commissioned in other websites?

Absolutely yes. You can use the logo however you want. The logo is an identity and as an identity, you can use it in any way you feel is right to identify yourself.

2. Can I commercialize the design?

Yes. All commercial rights belong to you the moment you pay me. That's why I send the original editable files. While you commercialize the design, you can't promote yourself as the creator of the design.

3. Can I resell the design?

Yes. As mentioned before you own all commercial rights, including selling the identity. But keep in mind that you can't violate my author right, which means you can't promote yourself as the author of the design neither the new buyer can, nor you can agree with a third party to pull down all images containing the design, including those on my portfolios.

4. Can I purchase the author right?

No. To keep my prices low I need to promote myself and the best way to promote myself is to expand my portfolio of designs with works done for clients.

For any questions please feel free to send me a note in deviantART or contact me through email or skype

News

Hi guys! This is an advance notice of changes in my commissions starting in January first of 2017. Some of this changes are big and other are unimportant but if you are interested in commissioning me for a logo or a business card you better read this.

Now I here is a list of the changes and then I will explain each one:

Changes

  • A non refundable advance payment of $12 USD
  • New price of logo designs for $48 USD
  • Safe keeping of a logo design for $12 USD
  • Unlimited design approaches, changes and revisions
  • Deadline of minimum TWO weeks
  • Limit time for Payments
  • Changes in the Terms and Conditions of the Service
  • What happens in case of a Multiple Discovery

Advance Payment

To request a commission you will need to make a payment of 12USD, only then the project will be considered "active". The payment is non refundable in case of cancelation/project desertion and once the project is completed it will be deducted from the cost of the commission.

I avoided this for a long time but now I'm forced to implement it, not only because there is at least one cancelation each month, I also get quite a few "ghost requests" (People that commission a logo but I only hear of them once) and also because some projects take a long time to finish.

Logo Designs for $48 USD

I actually warned of this increase months ago but in the end I decided to make the increase until January 2017. The reason for this increase is simple, things are more expensive and my prices are under the average.

Safe Keeping for $12 USD

This is basically the vault service but now for $12 USD you can request to keep your logo away from my portfolios forever.

I decided to charge for this service since some clients requested to keep their logos secret for long periods of time and that hinders my ability to gather new clients. Submiting new logos to my digital portfolios is an important way of promotion, it's a vestige of my experience as designer.

Unlimited design approaches, changes and revisions.

Those of you that have commissioned me know that I don't charge for number of design approaches, changes or revisions like other designers do. I actually price my commissions measuring my work time. Usually a project takes around 8 hours of actual work to finish it, when a project exceds that time I charge 5 USD for each additional hour.

Well, that's over. No more. From now on there is no time limit.

Deadline of minimum TWO weeks

No deadline must be less than two weeks or it will be considered a Rush Project. The reason for this is because sometimes I have prior commissions to finish before I can start a new one. If you have rush please inquire how is my work agenda at the moment.

Limit time for Payments

From now on all Paypal invoices will come with a time limit of 5 days.

To purchase a design in a Flash Sale, the payment must be done inmediately.

No payment is accepted without invoice.

New Terms and Conditions

Most of the terms and conditions will stay the same but there are some aditional ones. These are related to the advance payments, sharing my work with other designers and artists before the project is finished and what happens with the unused design approaches I make.

a. The client agrees to cover an initial fee to commission a design.
b. The client won't receive any high quality files until the remainder of the cost is acquitted.
c. While the project is in progress the client can't share any design approaches with other designers or artists to replicate or modify.
d. Once the transaction is done, the client accepts he/she is satisfied with the design provided and the price established.
e. There are no refunds of the initial fee or the remainder of the cost once it's paid.
f. After the payment is done the client will receive the original file together with any other file he/she requires.
g. The client can request minor changes to the design any time he/she desires.
h. The client can request new files anytime he/she desires.
i. The client has full commercial ownership of the design with all the rights it entails.
j. The designer keeps the authory rights to promote and display the work as made by him.
k. The client can't promote himself/herself as the creator of the design.
l. All unused design approaches belong to the designer.
m. The designer can re-use, recycle, modify, share or sell any unused design approaches.

What happens in case of Multiple Discovery

While working on a Logo I always try to find if there is an existing design that is too similar to my concept. I usually search in Google, Dribble, Bing and Logopond and make sure there is nothing but its not 100% certain. It's also responsability of the client to make sure the design provided it's not similar to an existing design.

In case of a Multiple Discovery (When inventions are made independently by multiple people), the client can request a new design but only if its within 3 months after finishing the commission.

I will try my best to explain how you can reach a concept that will take the shape of a functional and charming logo. You must understand I won't tell you how to design logos like mine since that's impossible unless you are trying to copy them and next you will see why.

Please forgive me if I lost track of my ideas, it will be a bit difficult to explain something that has become natural to me after years of practice.

What's an idea and what's a concept

If we look for it in a dictionary, an idea is something as simple as a thought, a mental image, a word, an opinion; while a concept is a plan, an unified idea, a philosophy.

From my personal perspective as logo designer (try to image this), an idea is a lightbulb and a concept is a chandelier with many lightbulbs. Now let's try making a more complex concept. Let's say inside each lightbulb of the chandelier is a letter and together they spell "classic". If you make that into an image you have a logo, more or less.

1+1= Infinity

Now that you know an idea is a thought and that a concept is a group of a ideas with an objective, think of designing a logo as a math problem, you have that basic operation of 1+1 but the result is not 2 but Infinity. No matter how much you try, no one will build the same concept even if you have the same problem of 1+1, that's why I said that you won't be able to make logos like mine unless you try to copy them.

But wait! Does it mean that if I use negative space like you do, am I copying you? The answer is no and I will tell you why

Is tracing copying or saving time?

For anyone that is an artist the following point may be hard to understand since tracing is considered taboo but with all honesty I can tell you I won't hesitate a second to trace an image if that will save me hours of work.

For example, let's say I have to make a fox and I know that part of my conept is a slim delicate fox in a leaping pose. What will I do? First I try searching for an image that is as close as possible to what I need and then trace it. Is it copying? Yeah, but if it's so bad then why my logo won't look just like that image I traced? The answer is simple, it's because that pose is just an idea of my whole concept.

I will try to explain in more detail with other example. Let's say you get a free silhouette of a guy weaing a suit. Anyone can download that image for free. But then you erase the head of the guy and put a fishbowl instead and then fill the bowl with small fish that take the shape of a brain and add a text saying "group ideas". Does that mean your logo is worth less because you saved time using that silhoette you downloaded for free? Of course not, it's only a tiny part of your concept, a small part of the operation that gave origin to that logo.

A personal style

Ok, I just said tracing something to save time is ok and I'm not the first designer that uses negative space and certainly I won't be the last. Then, how can my work be different from the work of other designers? Again it's something related to the concept. I can be very particular about certain ideas that I replicate on most of my concepts, like simetry or using geometric shapes as constructions (Yeah, I'm obsesive with clean shapes) Also I don't make abstract or hyper realistic designs because I prefer minimalistic and literal designs. Your personality is reflected in this kinds of aspects that appear in each one of your works even when you try different styles.

What's a logo?

I told you what's an idea and what's a concept but now you must understand what's a logo and that's very simple. A logo it's a symbol or design that identifies a brand. The key word here is "identify". When you make a logo for yourself you must have a clear idea of what identifies you because it will be a key piece to make your concept. In my case, it's a fox.

From our previous example, a logo is the result of the operation while the "building an identity" is the main problem.

Building a logo

Ok! Now you are ready to start your concept and your operation should be more or less like this:

identity + style = Infinity

That's the simple version of course. Now let's see it from my perspective:

fox + white + empty space + geometric construction + simetric + orange = Infinity

And I can still add more ideas to my concept, some are of most importance for a logo to work properly like: working on big and small formats, working on different colors, working with gradients, working with single colors, working with different fonts, etc.

Conclusion

In resume, to make a creative logo you need to build a concept based on creative ideas and this often take a lot of tries, because changing a single idea from the operation may result on a completely different concept. Having a wide source of inspiration(ideas) and trying different problems is the best way to practice.

Observations

It's important to have a good judgment to know where is the limit between tracing to save time and making a plain copy of an existing concept. As a designer, people pay me to have ideas and part of being a proffesional is have the morality to create something new and not try to rip off people doing something like this:

www.creativebloq.com/logo-desi…

But there is also the other side of the coin. With so many creatives and acces to the same sources of inspiration, it's possible to reach the same answer without knowing, specially in cases where you have few ideas to build a concept with. I faced this situation many times when I took part on design contests and the clients were very specific on what they wanted.

If you have any questions please feel free to send me a note or make a comment. Thank you for reading.

Hi guys! I usually don't rant about anything and only use my journal as a “things to do” list, but there are a few things I want to discuss with all of you in a smart constructive way.

Now, some of you guys have asked me why I don't have a tumblr, facebook, twitter or instragram account since it would help me find new clients. There are a few reasons for this:

1.Lack of Control

I want to decide who sees my work and what they can do with it. Many of these websites present many problems when crediting the origin of an image which increases the posibilities of impersonation or theft but that's not the worse part. Who can watch and comment my work is also beyond my control and these websites are full of people that love to do harm just for a momment of "fun". I don't need to spend hours each day doing damage control because a troll decided to critizice my work and tell all his troll friends that my work sucks or that I charge too much.

2. Lack of reputation

Now, these websites are trending topic but I want you to honesty tell me that, if you are looking for an artist or designer, will you go search for one on those websites? Of course not. DeviantART is an art oriented community with almost no design but I still receive emails or notes from people who were looking for a logo designer and found me here. That's the same reason I have Behance, Dribble and Logopond. Just like searching on an phone guide, they will look for the section that contains what they need.

3. Control over Saturation

I have the rule of watching back everyone that watches me so everyday I see over 300 new deviations. On a website like facebook or instagram, if I had the number of watchers I have here I would receive over a 1000 different messages and most of them would be useless and uninteresting to me. Being a freelancer I need great control on how I invest my time and I can't spend hours each day filtering important messages and post from those that are daily trash like photos of what someone had for breakfast.

4. Harder to Organize.

DeviantART being an art oriented website offers many ways to organize your works, decide when and where to display, automatic updates and even 10G of storash in the STASH. As far as I know none of the other websites offer that.

5. Healthier Community?

I have been in dA since 2006 more or less and I can count with a single hand the times I had a problem with someone in this community. Once it was a very obessive troll that felt offended by my works and the second was a fan of an artist that accused me of copying her work. I'm not a reclusive artist so Im in contact with people all the time yet I don't have the drama so many seem to adjudicate to the comunity. I saw a huge argument between big figures of traditional and digital art and also the conflict arised when one of the founders left and many artists followed him accusing the rest of the staff of turning the website into a business. Right now the Adopt Comunity is the trending topic and even with all the money and passionate fans it has, it still does a great job staying solid. Now I can't say the same of other websites, specially facebook that can ban someone for posting an artistic nude but allows all kind of hate, discriminatory and violent groups to be formed each day. And do I have to mention the witch huntings that made Twitter famous?

6. Better ways to deal with thieves

Impersonators and thieves are everywhere but lets be honest, in Facebook or Tumblr is way easier to take the work of someone else and say it's yours. A lot of people repost works without giving credit and sometimes it's impossible to find the original source. In deviantART you have more ways to fight that.

7. Control over your personal information

I can choose if use my real name or not, as well as if I should display my sex, country, etc. Something I can't say of Facebook that now won't even allow you to make an account if your name, your real name, sounds weird to them.

And what do you think? Do you agree, do you disagree? This is just my personal opinion and I understand not everyone had good experiences her but with millions of people subscibed to dA I still feel such cases are the vast minority.

Hi guys! A dear friend of mine (Cough :iconyukonix:) showed me this test and it really raised my mood. It's easy to do and it really gives you some insight about youself.

You can find it here www.16personalities.com/free-p…

I know, I know! You will say you just ended with your finals or are still going through them and you don't want to see anymore tests at all but believe me, this one is really good and easy. There are no wrong answers. BUT make sure to answer within 12 min and be honest.

If you are curious about my personality, it turns out I'm an Advocate. :dummy: You can find the details here www.16personalities.com/infj-p…

I think it is very accurate, my brother did it too and thought the same. Comment below and tell me your personality :D

Edit: I almost forgot to add that this test can be part of your curriculum. I'm serious!

Book News

You can read the progress of my book here:

How to Design a Logo, Step by Step Guide.Chapter 1 - From the start
When we design a logo, we are fulfilling a need for an identity, because people think in images, not words. For example if you read “banana” on a sign, you don't think of the actual letters that form the word “banana”, you think of the fruit, you form the image in your head. That's what we want when we make a logo.
The following are features every good logo should have:
Easy to adjust. This means it has to be understandable in both small and big scale.
Charming. Once you see it you won't forget it, even if you didn't understand what it meant, you will still think about it.
Readability. It should be easy to read at any size and in any color, and shouldn't leave room for misinterpretation.
Easy to comprehend. You have to know what service or product it offers when you look at it.
Authentic. The design must not mislead the observer to believe something it's not.

My commissions are always open, I just ask you to be patient because I work on them as ideas come by. I try to finish them as fast as I can but I give priority to quality over speed.

Commission Requests List (Progress):

Everyone who requested a commission please look on the list to see the progress. This is not to pressure you but to keep you informed of the proyect.

Commissioners that don't keep in contact after 7 days of the last message I sent will be considered "missing" and the commission will be canceled. If you picked an offer when you requested the commission t will be considered "expired" even if you come back later and request to continue the commission. If you send me a note explaining why you can't answer at the momment then the clock resets and you have another 7 days. I just need a word from you, that's all.

Questions

Questions about design, requests for comments and observations are always welcome. You don't bother me when you do so please feel free to do it. It's important to share knowledge and experience and be sure that if I have questions I won't hesitate to ask.

The Rules

It's simple, I will act as the client and you will be the designer. You won't compete with others to win, it will be like I'm working exclusively with each one of the participants. Your objective is for me to say "Great job! I will take the design" which marks the end of the exercise for you.

All design approaches must be put the Stash and sent in a note addressed as "DR" and the number of design approach you are sending. This is very important because some clients won't answer to emails they don't recognize and I will do it like that. It's a way to learn to keep control of your files and how to contact your clients properly.

The Objective

The point is that, at the end of this exercise, you have a piece of work to display on your gallery and learn something about how design commissions work

Exercise #1

I want a logo for a jewelry store called "Pink Elephant". It must be classy and appeal to both males an females. There will be a big sign outside cut in metal and must also work as a maker's mark.

The deadline is on Nov 9

Designer Tips

#1 Clients that aren't sure on what they want are open to different styles and concepts BUT there is always something they won't concede in. In this case is the importance of a logo that works on small and big sizes. Makers marks are engraved in jewelry to show who made then and the quality they have.

#2 Don't marry a concept. The client often won't tell you to try something else. It's up to you to say this is not working and try something else.

#3 Don't waste your time. This works on two ways, don't procrastinate or spend too much time on the same phase of the process, but also don't rush. Taking your time to look at examples and make a rain of ideas it's part of the work

Thank you so much to everyone who participated!

Please tell me what should I change to make the next exercise better.

1. How long have you been on DeviantArt?
10 years

2. What does your username mean?
I don't remember what Irian means, something about fighter, and Whitefox is a white fox.

Right

Can't choose just one. I love the works of Chigle, NinGeko, Koi-Lantern, Immoniasamadarag, AriiKnave, Sindonic, derylbraun, eumoir, stepke, Stephen-0akley and many more I wouldn't finish listing them.

What's the importance of a LOGO? Why would I need one?

You should know a logo isn't just a simple icon, emblem or wordmark related to your artistic name that you can use in your works as watermark or signature to make them look a bit more pretty. No, a logo it's how people will recognize your works as yours.

Companies use logos becuase that's how their clients recognize their products or services between the competence and it's often more important than their own name or even the quality of their products. That's because we think in images, NOT WORDS. When I mention you Apple what's the first thing you think? It's not the word "apple", nor an ippone, is the logo we all know. That's why images are so important, products with good identities tend to be remembered and shared more easily.

Image Sharing
Let's talk of an hypothetical case that you have cellphone you like a lot, it works great and looks awesome but it has a little failure, the icon on it's back is this :shaketroll: How comfortable would you feel to show it to your friends and recommend it? Not much isn't it? This is something that many good brands have faced and some have disappeared because of it while others, with not so good products, have found an opportunity thanks to their good identity.

Interesting fact, many jeans brands pay less than $0.75 to make a pair of jeans and sell them at $200.00 once the brand is attached to them.

Why I'm mentioning this?

Many potential clients have asked me, with these exact words, "why do you charge so much for your logos? Illustrations of other artists here on dA are less expensive and are much more complex" Well, the answer is easy but detailed.

  1. The price of my commissions on dA is less than I usually earn for my works. That's because I adjusted my prices to the budgets people here can pay confortably and because it usually takes less time and effort.
  2. Logos aren't illustrations, logos are displayed all the time and are used for commercial purposes. If I logo I make for you for $60.00 can help you earn $6,000.00 I think it's a pretty cheap price to pay.
  3. It's just not a logo, it's an Identity you can use for all your life if you wish, even more.
Last thoughts

Finally I just want to say that though I know I still have much to learn and that there are many other people better than me at making logos, I'm a professional. Not only because I'm an actual designer, with title an everything, but because I have the experience of making literally thousands of designs. If you have worked with me you will know I will offer you many design approaches, making adjustments, discarding ideas and trying new ones, all until you are happy with it.
I'm posting this because recently a guy/girl though he could steal one of my designs and use it without problem. This is something he/she should know:

  • Question: Your logo doesn't belong to you because you shared it with me in image.
WRONG. Sharing a document doesn't make it yours, same as saying you did something without showing proof of it. As long as you don't have a paper stating the design is yours with the signature of the designer, he/she can sell the design to someone else.

  • Question: Can I register a logo to my name with just a jpg image?
NO. Most countries will require you at least an eps file since they have to make a research to find if there is any other logo similar in name, colors or forms. Sometimes for even just a tiny similarity that may make people confuse your brand with others is enough for them to not allow the registration of your mark. You may also have to explain how you reached that design for technical reasons.

  • Question: You can't persecute me for using your design without paying.
I don't need to do it. I just can sell the design to someone else and let him/her register the design to their name. When that happens he or she can take legal actions against anyone who uses their brand without permission. All countries have laws related to this, that's why the ilegal use of brands is considered piracy.

  • Question: Internet is free and I can use it anywhere I want.
Again, TOTALLY WRONG. Most webpages are tied to either the Digital Millennium Copyright Act or the Creative Commons which allow designers and creators in general to request any design that violates this laws be removed of the page and the user be punished according to the policies of the site.

Please don't kid yourself. Just like you can't come to deviantArt and take any image you like and use it to make a profit of it without taking the risk of being charged with thievery, you can't request a design from me or other designer and just run away when you have a low resolution jpg image. I won't be sleepless because you used my design, I won't even get angry because it's a waste of my time. I will just save it and sell it to someone else who will pay for it while you have to watch your back because you will never know when someone will find out.
